Fine Art
I grew up in southwest Kansas, learning to love the creative process while watching my dad tinker at his workbench. He made what he modestly dubbed "junk art" from found objects. I went on to earn a BFA in Graphic Design and Illustration from The University of Kansas in Lawrence. After a series of personal losses in 1999-2000, (for info on that, check out the "Press" tab) I adopted the mantra, “the sun always rises” while forming smiling sun faces. When my father died, my suns became bigger – I started incorporating found objects (hubcaps are a favorite) as a nod to him. My use of re-purposed items is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to hope, redemption, and transformation. Since 2011. CBS Sunday Morning has broadcast about 30 of my original suns as the show fades to commercial. They chose one of my images–a sun rising over a field of sunflowers in bloom – to feature for May in the first CBS Sunday Morning suns calendar, "Follow the Suns", produced by Simon & Schuster for 2022.
