Toni Brou grew up in southwest Kansas, learning to love the creative process while watching her dad tinker at his workbench, making what he modestly dubbed "junk art" from found objects. Toni went on to earn a BFA in Graphic Design and Illustration from The University of Kansas. After a series of tragedies, she adopted the mantra, "the sun always rises" while forming smiling sun faces out of modeling compound. When her father died, the suns became bigger, and she started incorporating found objects (hubcaps are a favorite) as a nod to him. The inclusion of re-purposed items in Toni's assemblages is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to hope, redemption and transformation. Since 2011. CBS Sunday Morning has shown about two dozen of Toni's original smiling sun assemblages as the show fades to commercial.
